As the national highways of india were numbered in very confusing manner and there was no logic behind it, so goverment of india in 2010 provided a numbering system which give information about the loction of highway in the country and also about the direction of highway whether it is from EAST to WEST or SOUTH to NORTH
There are three important points to understand that system
1. Highways in NORTH-SOUTH direction will be given EVEN NUMBER and number will increase as we move EAST to WEST. But the number will be of SINGLE DIGIT or DOUBLE DIGIT (IN CASE OF MAJOR HIGHWAYS)
To understand that point lets take an example
NH-8 : DELHI TO MUMBAI (via Jaipur ,Vadodra )
2.Highways in EAST -WEST direction will be given ODD NUMBER and number will increase as we move NORT to SOUTH. But the number will be of SINGLE DIGIT or DOUBLE DIGIT (IN CASE OF MAJOR HIGHWAYS)
To understand that point lets take an example
NH-11: AGRA TO BIKANER (Via Jaipur)
3. Highways which have three digit number are branche or subsidiary highways of main highways Ex. NH-144, 244 are the branche highways of NH-44
