What is milestone

A milestone is a stone which tells about the distance from the place where  milestone is fixed to the place which mentioned on it. On the indian highway apart from distance the diffrent colour of milestone also tells us about the type of highway.

First use of milestone in india

The first mile stone of india were constructed in 16th century by the Afgan ruler Shear shah suri. These milestone were named Kos Minars at that time.These minars were 9.1m in hight.
Kos is an ancient unit of distance which can  represent distance of 1.8 kms or 3.2 kms

1-Yellow and white milestone- 


While treveling on the road if you see the milestone colour is yello and white it must be the national highway. NHAI is the responsible authority for construction and maintenance of these roads.
Total lenght of national highway is about 142,126 kms.

2-Green and white milestone

 The green and white milestone represent the state highways. State highways are those highways which runs within the state

3-Blue or black and white milestone

This represent city or main distric road.The local authority like PWD construct these type of roads

4-Orange and white milestone 


These type of milestone represent the village roads
